• What we’ll do
A talk and discussion on the Eastern Orthodox Christian art of the icon, including an exploration of how an icon is written and time for meditation in front of a sacred icon. Much more than a simple work of art an icon embodies the Christian principle that the material world is completely alive to God and can communicate something of the divine purpose and blessing to us. As Bishop Kallistos Ware tells us, ‘the icon is not merely a piece of decoration or a visual aid. We do more than just look at icons or talk about them; we pray with them.’ Come and experience how the art and beauty of our material world and human creativity can lead us to the mystery and beauty of the Divine.
The afternoon is led by Fr Ryan Green and Sister Gillian-Mary. Ryan Green PhD is the parish priest of All Saints’ Hove. Ryan has given talks on iconography in London, Oxford and Western Australia and wrote about the sacred iconography of the Orthodox tradition as part of his Master’s Degree at Oxford University. Gillian-Mary is a nun with the Community of the Sacred Passion, Shoreham-by-Sea, and has been writing icons for more than 20 years.
Donations welcome (to support the maintenance and running costs of All Saints Church).
